Chen, Peter K. (Georgetown University, Washington, D.C.), Ronald V. Citarella, Omar Salazar, and Rita R. Colwell. Properties of two marine bacteriophages. J. Bacteriol. 91:1136-1139. 1966.-Various properties have been determined for two bacteriophages, NCMB 384 and 385, and their host, NCMB 397, a Cytophaga sp., isolated from the marine environment. The purified bacteriophages have been subjected to serological analysis, results of which indicate a high degree of relatedness. Purified, highly polymerized deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) prepared from the host strain showed an overall base composition of 37 moles% guanine + cytosine (buoyant density of 1.696 g/cc). The bacteriophage DNA, in the native configuration, from NCMB 384 and 385 banded at 1.691 g/cc in a CsCl gradient and the denatured bacteriophage DNA demonstrated a bimodal peak. Stability tests of the bacteriophages in various buffers and diluents suggest a requirement for inorganic cations, most likely Na(+) and Mg(++), for retention of viability.

Complete genome sequences of two Persicivirga bacteriophages, P12024S and P12024L.
The phylum Bacteroidetes is one of the major bacterial phyla in marine environments, where bacteriophages are highly abundant. Bacteriophages infecting members of the phylum Bacteroidetes, however, have not been well represented in public genome databases. Here we announce the genome sequences of two bacteriophages, P12024S and P12024L, that were isolated from coastal seawater and lytically inf...
متن کاملMarine phage genomics: the tip of the iceberg
Marine viruses are the most abundant biological entity in the oceans, the majority of which infect bacteria and are known as bacteriophages. Yet, the bulk of bacteriophages form part of the vast uncultured dark matter of the microbial biosphere. In spite of the paucity of cultured marine bacteriophages, it is known that marine bacteriophages have major impacts on microbial population structure ...
متن کاملRole of ciliates, flagellates and bacteriophages on the mortality of marine bacteria and on dissolved-DNA concentration in laboratory experimental systems
Several marine bacteriophages, a ciliate (Uronema sp.), and a flagellate (Pseudobodo sp.) were used to study comparatively the grazing and clearance rates of four marine bacteria. Bacteria were fluorescently labelled using rhodamine isothiocyanate. The results obtained indicate that bacteriophages and flagellates caused a significantly higher (P , 0.025) decrease in the number of marine bacteri...
متن کاملGenome sequences of two novel phages infecting marine roseobacters
Two bacteriophages, DSS3Phi2 and EE36Phi1, which infect marine roseobacters Silicibacter pomeroyi DSS-3 and Sulfitobacter sp. EE-36, respectively, were isolated from Baltimore Inner Harbor water. These two roseophages resemble bacteriophage N4, a large, short-tailed phage infecting Escherichia coli K12, in terms of their morphology and genomic structure. The full genome sequences of DSS3Phi2 an...
متن کاملIsolation and Characterization of Two Lytic Bacteriophages Against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Evaluation of Their Antibacterial Effects on Clinical Isolates of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli in The Northwest of Iran
Background and Objective: This study was carried out to isolate lytic bacteriophages against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and analyze their biological characteristics and antibacterial effects on other clinical isolates of bacteria. Methods: Isolating two lytic bacteriophages against two strains of P. aeruginosa was carried out using the double-layer agar method. After investigating the antibacteria...
